    Abstract

    Since 1996, the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) have provided a leading global measure of governance perceptions, publishing annual composite indicators for over 200 economies across six dimensions: Voice and Accountability, Political Stability, Government Effectiveness, Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law, and Control of Corruption. The indicators draw on 35 cross-country data sources, including firm and household surveys as well as expert assessments.

    Paper exhibits were reproduced on a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 11 Enterprise
    • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1145G7 CPU @ 2.60GHz
    • Memory available: 15.7 GB

    Reproduction instructions

    To reproduce the indicators, a new user should:

    1. Open the 0. WGI master do-file.
    2. Update the file path in the do-file.
    3. Run the code.

    Located at: "1.input" folder– this folder contains 30 Excel files XXX.xlsx, where XXX is a three-letter code corresponding to each of the 35 WGI data sources. The Excel files contain the data from each source and are posted separately on the WGI website as well. The full list of the WGI data sources is available at the following link.

    Note
    Located in the “1.input/Commercial Sources” folder, this section contains 5 Excel files named XXX.xlsx, where XXX is the three-letter code corresponding to each of the 35 WGI data sources. These Excel files include the data from each respective source and are also posted individually on the WGI website. A full list of WGI data sources is available at the following link. These 5 sources are accessible but require purchase. The package, therefore, includes the necessary intermediate data, allowing users to run the full package without needing to buy the original sources. In addition, each data source Excel file contains all the necessary details to obtain the full dataset.

    Data statement

    Most data sources are publicly available and included in the reproducibility package. A small subset of sources requires purchase; however, the reproducibility package provides the necessary intermediate data so users can run the code and reproduce all results without needing access to the proprietary files. Additional documentation is provided for users who wish to obtain the original datasets. Please see the README file for more information.
