    Abstract

Chapter 1, and annexes 1 to 3, of this study examine the monetary aspects of poverty and inequality in Mexico, using data from the Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares (ENIGH) from 2000 to 2022 (as processed in SEDLAC, Socio-Economic Database for Latin America and the Caribbean), as well as Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo (ENOE) from 2005 to 2023. In the case of ENIGH, due to technical and methodological changes, between 2006 to 2008 and between 2014 to 2016, the series are not fully comparable. Therefore, the analysis is organized into three six-year periods: 2000-2006, 2008-2014, and 2016-2022. This division enables a balanced comparison of trends and changes in poverty and inequality over time. In the case of ENOE, the COVID-19 pandemic led to temporary changes in data collection methods, so the series of rotating panels used for measures of chronic poverty is interrupted in 2020.

    Reproducibility

    Technology environment

To reproduce the results in this paper a new user should do the following.

    1. Request Dataset Access: Check the README for the list of required datasets. Request access and place them in the correct folders.
    2. Update File Paths & Run Code: Modify dataset paths in master_PA Mexico Chapter 1 do file and run the code.
    3. Generate Figures: Most figures will be generated in the two master Excel files FINAL figures For MEX PEA.xlsx and FINAL tables for MEX PEA.xlsx, and a few figures for the appendix are saved in the output folder.
    4. Verify Results Without Access to the Data: As getting access to some data might be challenging the master Excel file and resulting tables are included for validation. Users can compare these files with the results presented in the paper.
    Technology requirements

Paper exhibits were reproduced in a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 10 Enterprise, version 21H2
    • Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6226R CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2900 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
    • Memory available: 128 GB
    • Software version: Stata 18.0 MP

    Name
Socio-Economic Database for Latin America and the Caribbean (SEDLAC)
    Note
Source: National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), World Bank, and SEDLAC. This dataset includes all raw SEDLAC databases for Mexico's National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH) from 2000 to 2022, along with Consumer Price Indexes (CPIs). Location: dta/raw/years/; dta/ipc_sedlac_wb_mexico_2000-2022.dta. The dataset was accessed using the WB-internal Stata library datalibweb. which is for internal use only. Access to this data is restricted to World Bank Group employees. The code to consult the data is included in the package. If you are an employee, please refer to the instructions in the README file for access procedures.
    Access policy
Data is limited-access and requires purchase or human approval. It is not included in the reproducibility package.

The do-files and detailed instructions for creating these datasets are available in the directory do/Panel_ENOE_do/. However, due to large memory requirements, only the intermediate datasets are included in this package. The reproducibility verification was conducted using these intermediate datasets. While the do-files to process the ENOE data from raw sources were not executed due to memory constraints, they were manually inspected for completeness and accuracy. These do-files, along with a README explaining the process, are included in do/Panel_ENOE_do/.
