    Abstract

This paper provides the first experimental evidence on the long-term effects of work-study programs, leveraging a randomized lottery design from a national program in Uruguay. Participation leads to a persistent 11 percent increase in formal labor earnings, observable seven years after the program. Effects are stronger for youth who participate during pivotal educational transitions and are larger for vulnerable youth and men, while remaining positive for women and non-vulnerable youth. The program is highly cost-effective, with average impacts exceeding those of job training programs and comparable to early childhood investments.

    Technology environment

    Cleaning: 55 minutes
    Analysis: 42 minutes

    Technology requirements

Paper exhibits were reproduced on a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 11 Enterprise, version 21H2
    • Memory available: 32 GB
    • Software version: Stata 18.0

    Reproduction instructions

The package's replication was done through a virtual verification due to data access restrictions.
To reproduce the findings in this paper, a replicator must:

    1. Secure Access to Confidential Data: The data used in this paper contains personally identifiable information (PII) and is not publicly available. More details are included in the README file.
    2. Obtain Cleaning Codes: The cleaning scripts contain personally identifiable information (PII) and are therefore not included in the replication package. If data access is secured, you may contact the author at dubfal@worldbank.org to request these scripts.
    3. Adjust File Paths and Run Code: Update the paths in main_cleaning.do and main_analysis.do to match your local environment. Run both scripts sequentially to reproduce the analysis.

Because access to the confidential data is unlikely for most users, this package includes the outputs generated by the author, verified by the replicators.
These files can be used to review and validate the results presented in the paper.
