Using double and triple-difference designs it is shown that a three-week extension of the winter break reduced test scores by 0.18 of a standard deviation, which is equivalent to six to nine weeks of schooling. There is evidence of larger negative impacts at the bottom of the math test score distribution, suggesting that the negative effects were stronger among schools with a higher share of students behind the expected level of proficiency. Finally, consistent with the evidence on school decentralization we find that locally-managed schools were better able to cope with the negative shock compared to state-managed schools.
Reproducibility package (data and code) for Learning when Schools Shutdown: Impacts of H1N1 Outbreak on Learning Loss and Learning Gaps
2024-04
The code in this folder generates the tables and figures in the paper "Learning when Schools Shutdown: Impacts of H1N1 Outbreak on Learning Loss and Learning Gaps" by Vivian Amorim, Caio Piza, and Ildo José Lautharte Júnior
Source: Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE).
Located at: Raw/IBGE: base_de_dados_2010_2014.xls, base.xls, popmunic2007layoutTCU14112007.xls.
Step-by-step instructions on downloading the specific files are included in the README file.
