The 22-week couples training program aimed to improve communication, shift gender attitudes, and promote gender equality. Randomizing at both village and couple levels, we find the program caused large unexpected increases in IPV: treated women reported five and 10 percentage points more physical and sexual violence than control women, respectively, while control women living in treated villages reported even larger increases of 11 and 17 percentage points. Evidence suggests these increases stem from male backlash against perceived identity threats, as women\u2019s more progressive attitudes and aspirations contrast with men\u2019s pressure to maintain traditional norms, generating friction within households. Innovative measurement techniques and extensive robustness checks show that changes in reporting behavior cannot explain the results.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Rwanda","code":"RWA","type":"Country"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Intimate Partner Violence"},{"name":"Gender"},{"name":"Identity"},{"name":"Spillovers"},{"name":"Norms"},{"name":"Field Experiments"}],"topics":[{"id":"C93","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","name":" Field Experiments ","url":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","parent_id":"C9"},{"id":"J12","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","name":" Marriage; Marital Dissolution; Family Structure; Domestic Abuse ","url":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","parent_id":"J1"},{"id":"J16","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","name":" Economics of Gender; Non-labor Discrimination ","url":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","parent_id":"J1"},{"id":"O12","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","name":" Microeconomic Analyses of Economic Development ","url":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","parent_id":"O1"}],"language":[{"name":"English","code":"EN"}],"data_statement":"All data is not yet publicly available but is expected to be made available through the World Bank Microdata Library in the future.","repository_uri":[{"name":"Reproducible Research Repository (World Bank)","uri":"https:\/\/reproducibility.worldbank.org"}],"technology_requirements":"~ 15 minutes","reproduction_instructions":"To reproduce the results in this package (once the data has been made available), please follow these steps:\n1.
