Does involving husbands help or hinder the effort? Using an experiment in Tunisia, this paper shows that providing cash grants and financial training to women stimulates their income generating activities, but only when their partners are not involved. The program did not alter traditional gender roles. Instead, it encouraged employment of other household members and investments in small-scale agriculture and livestock farming \u2014 two activities traditionally undertaken by women at home. The impacts on household living standards are overwhelmingly positive, and suggest that the program is highly cost-effective.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Tunisia","code":"TUN","type":"cty"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Cash Transfers"},{"name":"Financial Training"},{"name":"Gender Roles"},{"name":"Employment"}],"topics":[{"id":"J16","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php","name":"Economics of Gender \u2022 Non-labor Discrimination"},{"id":"L25","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php","name":"Firm Performance: Size, Diversification, and Scope"},{"id":"L26","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php","name":"Entrepreneurship"},{"id":"O12","vocabulary":"JEL Classifications","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php","name":"Microeconomic Analyses of Economic Development"}],"data_statement":"All data is public and contained in the reproducibility package.","methods":[{"name":"RCT"},{"name":"OLS"}],"repository_uri":[{"name":"Reproducible Research Repository (World Bank)","uri":" https:\/\/reproducibility.worldbank.org"}],"technology_environment":"OS: Windows 10 Enterprise, version 21H2; Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8665U CPU @ 1.90GHz 2.11 GHz; Memory available: 15.8 GB\n","reproduction_instructions":"A readme file with detailed instructions is part of the reproducibility package.","disclaimer":"The materials in the reproducibility packages are distributed as they were prepared by the staff of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development\/the World Bank.
