This study randomizes the price of a women-reserved \u201csafe space\u201d in Rio de Janeiro and crowd-source information on 22,000 rides. Women in the public space experience harassment once a week. A fifth of riders are willing to forgo 20 percent of the fare to ride in the \u201csafe space\u201d. Randomly assigning riders to the \u201csafe space\u201d reduces physical harassment by 50 percent, implying a cost of $1.45 per incident. Implicit Association Tests show that women face a stigma for riding in the public space that may outweigh the benefits of the safe space.","production_date":"2020-06","geographic_units":[{"name":"Brazil","code":"BRA","type":"cty"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Sexual Harassment"},{"name":"Gender"},{"name":"Public Transit"},{"name":"Mobility"},{"name":"Revealed Preferences"},{"name":"Implicit Association Test"},{"name":"Stigma"}],"acknowledgment_statement":"This draft bene\fted from comments from Girija Borker, Peter Christensen, Simeon Djankov, Erica Field, Gabriel Kreindler, John Loeser, Sveta Milusheva, Pedro Olinto, Dev Patel, Martin Raiser, Dan Rogger, and participants in seminars at ASSA 2020, Duke, the World Bank, INSEAD, ITU, Gottingen, and NEUDC.
