This paper develops high-frequency, news-based indicators that separately track four dimensions of political instability - politically motivated violence, mass civil protest, instability within the regime, and instability of the regime -- for 17 West and Central African countries over 1990--2024, drawing on a broad and deliberately balanced set of international news sources for a region where existing text-based measures are at their thinnest. The four dimensions contain distinct information: they spike at different historical moments, differ in persistence, and co-move across borders to varying degrees. Embedding the indicators in a monthly VAR for the Democratic Republic of the Congo reveals heterogeneous macroeconomic transmission: violence shocks resemble localized risk and supply disruptions; protest shocks generate short-lived risk repricing; within-regime instability maps to slower, more persistent uncertainty effects; and regime instability behaves like a broad confidence shock with demand restraint. Complementary firm-level evidence from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys shows that heightened political violence is associated with significantly slower firm sales growth, with the burden concentrated among larger firms, domestically owned firms, and service-sector firms.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Sub-Saharan Africa","code":"SSA"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Political Instability"},{"name":"Developing Countries"},{"name":"Var"},{"name":"Firms Performance"},{"name":"News Sentiment"},{"name":"Africa"}],"topics":[{"id":"C43","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Index Numbers and Aggregation","parent_id":"C4"},{"id":" C82","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Methodology for Collecting, Estimating, and Organizing Macroeconomic Data \u2022 Data Access","parent_id":"C8"},{"id":" E32","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Business Fluctuations \u2022 Cycles","parent_id":"E3"},{"id":" F51","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"International Conflicts \u2022 Negotiations \u2022 Sanctions","parent_id":"F5"},{"id":" F52","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"National Security \u2022 Economic Nationalism","parent_id":"F5"},{"id":" N47","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Africa \u2022 Oceania","parent_id":"N4"}],"output":[{"type":"Working Paper","description":"Policy Research Working Paper (PRWP)","title":"News-Based Multidimensional Political Instability In West And Central Africa"}],"language":[{"name":"English","code":"EN"}],"technology_requirements":"Run time: ~ 30 minutes.","disclaimer":"The materials in the reproducibility packages are distributed as they were prepared by the staff of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development\/The World Bank.
