This paper asks instead whether a warming climate is associated with polarization \u2013 a hollowing out of the middle \u2013 in sub-Saharan Africa. Pooling harmonized consumption surveys from a pre-2010 and a post-2010 period, we treat the region as one continent-wide distribution and use relative distribution methods to isolate changes in shape from median growth. Polarization rises sharply, and far more below the median than above. A Shapley decomposition of the change ranks local temperature exposure second only to asset endowments, with its contribution concentrated in the lower tail and robust to alternative climate indicators and balancing methods.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Sub-Saharan Africa","code":"SSA"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Sub-Saharan Africa"},{"name":"Climate Change"},{"name":"Economic Polarization"},{"name":"Relative Distribution Analysis"},{"name":"Shapley Decomposition"}],"topics":[{"id":"C14","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Semiparametric and Nonparametric Methods: General","parent_id":"C1"},{"id":" D31","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Personal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions","parent_id":"D3"},{"id":" D63","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Equity, Justice, Inequality, and Other Normative Criteria and Measurement","parent_id":"D6"},{"id":" O15","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Human Resources \u2022 Human Development \u2022 Income Distribution \u2022 Migration","parent_id":"O1"},{"id":" O55","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Africa","parent_id":"O5"},{"id":" Q54","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","name":"Climate \u2022 Natural Disasters and Their Management \u2022 Global Warming","parent_id":"Q5"}],"output":[{"type":"Working Paper","description":"Policy Research Working Paper (PRWP)","title":"Climate Change And Polarization: Some Inconvenient Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa"}],"language":[{"name":"English","code":"EN"}],"technology_requirements":"Run time: 36.5 hours","disclaimer":"The materials in the reproducibility packages are distributed as they were prepared by the staff of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development\/The World Bank.
