The purpose of the project and the data it collected was to identify opportunities for refugee integration in Tajikistan. We also thank the Research Support Budget at the World Bank, Daniel Garrote for his initial support on instrument design, and Merve Demirel for supporting data collection.","production_date":"2023-10","abstract":"How does exposure to extremist ideologies affect refugee integration? To delve into this question, we utilize a census of Afghan refugees carried out in Tajikistan in 2023, after the dramatic and sudden shift in territorial control of the Taliban in Afghanistan. We find that refugees born in provinces with greater exposure to the Taliban\u2019s territorial control between 2017 and 2021, are less integrated within host communities, relative to their counterparts. Complementary analyses suggest that these refugees also exhibit lower levels of education attainment and have more prevalent mental health issues. We do not detect, however, any impacts of exposure to extremist ideologies on income, consumption, or labor market-related variables.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Afghanistan","code":"AFG","type":"Country"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Refugees"},{"name":"Female Education"},{"name":"Extremism"}],"topics":[{"id":"F22","name":"International Migration","parent_id":"F2","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel"},{"name":"Conflict \u2022 Conflict Resolution \u2022 Alliances \u2022 Revolutions","id":"D74","parent_id":"D7","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel"},{"name":"Economics of Minorities, Races, Indigenous Peoples, and Immigrants \u2022 Non-labor Discrimination","id":"J15","parent_id":"J1","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel"},{"name":"Analysis of Education","id":"I21","parent_id":"I2","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel"},{"name":"General","id":"I10","parent_id":"I1","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel"}],"output":[{"type":"Working Paper ","title":"Unveiling the Impacts of Extremism in Refugee\u2019s Integration","authors":"Laurent Bossavie, Sandra V.
