Results from difference-in-difference estimations show that the reform resulted in rising employment rates for mothers of six-year-old children. The effect is lower for mothers living in households with elderly people, but larger for those facing stronger trade-offs prior to the reform. Overall, investing in universal, compulsory, public childcare is beneficial and could significantly increase female employment and labor force participation rates.","geographic_units":[{"name":"Romania","code":"ROU","type":"Country"}],"keywords":[{"name":"Government Policy"},{"name":"Childcare"},{"name":"Economics of Gender"},{"name":"Public Policy"},{"name":"Time Allocation"},{"name":"Labor Supply"}],"topics":[{"id":"I28","parent_id":"I2","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","name":"Government Policy"},{"id":"J13","parent_id":"J1","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","name":"Fertility \u2022 Family Planning \u2022 Child Care \u2022 Children \u2022 Youth"},{"id":"J16","parent_id":"J1","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","name":"Economics of Gender \u2022 Non-labor Discrimination"},{"id":"J18","parent_id":"J1","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","name":"Public Policy"},{"id":"J22","parent_id":"J2","vocabulary":"Journal of Economic Literature (JEL)","uri":"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/econlit\/jelCodes.php?view=jel","name":"Time Allocation and Labor Supply"}],"language":[{"name":"English","code":"EN"}],"technology_requirements":"~2.5 hours runtime","data_statement":"The paper at hand uses two different data sets.
