Industrial firms are the primary sources of emissions in India, with more than 80% of the fossil-fuel-based CO2 emissions coming from the productive sectors, including food and agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity generation, public transportation, and the services sectors. Reducing emissions from industrial firms is essential to meet the country’s targets for reducing various emissions, including those under its Nationally Determined Contribution net-zero emission goal. An understanding of the policies and measures preferred by industrial firms is essential for policymakers to design effective policies that meet emission reduction targets. We conduct a survey to examine whether and how Indian firms will reduce their emissions and how they will respond to the introduction of market-based policy instruments. We find that Indian firms understand the importance of reducing their emissions and are willing to undertake various measures to reduce them. While firms’ preferences for reducing emissions are heterogeneous, most of the surveyed firms favor investment in cleaner technologies and fuels rather than paying taxes on emissions.
