    Abstract

This report provides an in-depth assessment of refugee well-being, drawing on recent microdata available on forcibly displaced populations and establishing a foundation for future monitoring. In addition to comparing refugee poverty with that of host communities, it demonstrates how inclusive policies and programs can promote socioeconomic inclusion and improve refugee welfare. The report concludes with a call to action, advocating for a shift in the current response model and presenting concrete recommendations to translate strategic vision into effective implementation.

    Reproducibility

    Technology environment

Paper exhibits were reproduced on a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 11 Enterprise
    • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1145G7 CPU @ 2.60GHz
    • Memory available: 15.7 GB
    • Software version: Stata 18.0 MP

    Technology requirements

    Runtime: 5 minutes

    Reproduction instructions

To reproduce the findings of the report, a new user should follow these steps:

    1. Request access to the data: Once the data are published in the World Bank Microdata Library, request access to the licensed harmonized dataset.
    2. Place the dataset in the correct folder: Save the file harmonized.dta in Data/Modified Data/
    3. Run the main script: Open the main do file, update the file paths as needed for your local environment, and run the script. This will generate the file All_figures in the folder: Tables_Figures

    Notes

    • The file harmonized.dta will be made available through the World Bank Microdata Library.
    • The code used to construct this file is included in the reproducibility package (harmonized do file).
    • A full list of the original raw datasets is provided in the README file.
    • Since access to the harmonized dataset requires human approval, the package also includes the final outputs generated by the replicators ( All_figures), which can be used to reproduce the findings reported in the paper.

    Data

    Datasets
    Harmonized Household and Refugee Microdata
    Name
    Harmonized Household and Refugee Microdata
    Note
File location: Data/Modified Data/harmonized.dta. This dataset contains harmonized household- and individual-level microdata integrating national household surveys and refugee/host community surveys. Countries included are Chad, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, Niger, Uganda, and West Bank and Gaza. The dataset is generated by the authors by running the harmonization and data preparation code included in the reproducibility package (harmonized do) and is the required input to reproduce the final figures and tables in the paper. A detailed list of all underlying surveys and data sources used in the harmonization process is provided in the README. Users with access to the underlying raw data can reproduce the harmonized dataset and the paper’s findings by running the code included in the package.
    Access policy
Data is forthcoming in the World Bank Microdata Library. Data will be published under a licensed access.
