    Abstract

Educational attainment among adolescent girls in Nigeria remains low, particularly in the northern states where early marriage and limited schooling constrain women’s economic opportunities. This study evaluates whether school-based life skills training delivered in safe spaces within senior secondary schools, alone or combined with digital literacy training, can improve educational, health, and economic outcomes for adolescent girls in northern Nigeria. Twelve months post-intervention, girls in treated schools show modest improvements in curriculum-related knowledge, with no effects on school retention or socio-emotional skills. Adding digital literacy training improved digital skills in the state where it had been fully implemented by midline, underscoring the role of implementation fidelity. These findings highlight both the promise and limitations of integrated school-based interventions and underscore the importance of delivery capacity for scaling technology-based programs in low-resource settings.

    Reproduction instructions

To reproduce the findings in this paper, a replicator must:

    1. Secure Access to Data: Download the two datasets in the replication package and place in the 'Data' folder
    2. Run the Package: Edit the file path in line 30 of the do-file master, and run it.

Since not all the data is included, the package includes the results produced by replicators. These files can be used to review the results presented in the paper.

File location: Data/baseline_ado_school_anon_clean.dta. The Microdata Library includes data without the treatment status. These data are identical to those in the package provided to the verification team except for a treatment status variable. To merge baseline data from the Microdata Library to one dataset use the following steps: 1. Import the adolescent dataset: use "`user’ \Adolescent Survey_anon.dta", clear 2. Merge the school dataset: merge m:1 school_id using "`user’ \School Survey_anon.dta", force nogen keep(master match) 3. Merge the caregiver dataset: merge 1:1 adolescent_id using "`user’ \Caregiver Survey_anon.dta", force nogen keep(master match)
