    Abstract

This paper investigates the impacts of school closures on learning outcomes in a Brazilian state during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic outbreak. Using double and triple-difference designs it is shown that a three-week extension of the winter break reduced test scores by 0.18 of a standard deviation, which is equivalent to six to nine weeks of schooling. There is evidence of larger negative impacts at the bottom of the math test score distribution, suggesting that the negative effects were stronger among schools with a higher share of students behind the expected level of proficiency. Finally, consistent with the evidence on school decentralization we find that locally-managed schools were better able to cope with the negative shock compared to state-managed schools.
