    Abstract

The global public-sector healthcare workforce — including both medical and administrative and support staff — are central to the delivery of quality public health services. Effectively managing this workforce is conditional on sound understanding of public sector employment and compensation practices. This includes good data on their size, characteristics, and wage levels. Cross-national data on the global health workforce, however, has been limited to date. This note aims to address this information gap by presenting stylized facts on the global health workforce drawing on the Worldwide Bureaucracy Indicators (WWBI), a global dataset on employment and pay practices in the public sector produced by the World Bank. The dataset allows first-of-its-kind assessment of both the size, structure, and demographic characteristics of the healthcare workforce as well as the quality, equity, and competitiveness of compensation practices within the sector in a uniform, globally harmonized manner.

    Reproduction instructions

To successfully replicate the analysis using this package, new users must modify the file path in the main 'do' file and execute it. Please note that Figures 3 and 11 cannot be replicated with this package, as they rely on unpublished data, and the relevant code sections have been commented out. The authors have provided all necessary code to replicate the other figures, although there may be some aesthetic differences and rounding discrepancies, as the original figures were created using Excel and Data Wrapper. For more detailed information, please refer to the attached report and the README file.

    Note
    1. The number of medical workers and the medical workers per capita data are based on unpublished WWBI data, which was obtained directly from the authors and cannot be made public. This dataset is used exclusively for Figure 3. 2. The public sector wage premium for healthcare workers compared to public administration workers is also based on unpublished WWBI data obtained directly from the authors, and cannot be disclosed. This dataset is specifically used for Figure 11. These indicators were not published because they were developed after the publication of the WWBI and fell outside the scope of the current version

    Data statement

Most of the data used in this study are publicly available and included in the reproducibility package. However, a small portion of the Worldwide Bureaucracy Indicators (WWBI) dataset remains unpublished. This unpublished portion was obtained directly from the authors of the WWBI and cannot be disclosed publicly. It is used exclusively for Figure 3 and Figure 11 of the report.
