    Abstract

    This work focuses on the case of panels with a rotating sample design. This case represents a powerful hybrid solution for facing the sample erosion for deaths and movers and the impact of lack of sample representativeness for new births, migration flows. Moreover, the sample fatigue introduces an increasing measurement error. As the length of the panel surveys increases, there is an increasing interest, but also increasing challenges in preserving the quality of the panel sample estimates. The effect is particularly evident in long-run panels. A correct design, implementation, and use of a panel survey shall consider a set of methods to deal with these problems at different stages of the statistical process: The sampling design, the data collection, and the estimation.

    Technology environment

    Paper exhibits were reproduced in a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 10 Enterprise
    • Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7- 4860 @ 2.27GHz 2.26 GHz
    • Memory available: 16 GB
    • Software version: Stata version 18.0 MP, R version 4.4.1

    Reproduction instructions

    To run this package, new users must follow these instructions:

    1. Download the required datasets, refer to the README for details, and place them in the appropriate folder.
    2. Modify the path in the main Stata do-file to match your directory.
    3. Add the path to your R installation in the Stata do-file.
    4. Update the path in the main R script and save it.
    5. Run the main Stata do-file to execute the entire analysis.

The data currently available on the Microdata Library is Version 2 (V2). However, the authors used Version 1 (V1), which may result in slight differences in the reproduced results. Public use files from the World Bank Microdata Library are typically not included in reproducibility packages. However, since V1 is no longer available online and V2 may contain minor changes, V1 has been included in this package to ensure reproducibility.
