    Abstract

    The Public Institutions Global Observatory (PIGO) annual report is a digest of the latest evidence on public institutions. The report reviews: (1) global trends in institutions that shape the policy arena and center of government and (2) selected Institutions Department-led operational engagements and knowledge products. This review provides a high-level analysis of public institutions and does not intend to provide in-depth treatment of institutions: more in-depth discussions are referred to in the listed references throughout this report. PIGO is thus a digest that can assist World Bank Group staff in learning about the latest trends in public institutions, relevant operations for institutional reforms, and data and analytics across regions.

    Technology environment

    Paper exhibits were reproduced in a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 11 Enterprise
    • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 165U, 2100 Mhz, 12 Core(s), 14 Logical Processor(s)
    • Memory available: 32 GB
    • Software version: Stata version 18 MP
    Technology requirements

    Run time: 5 minutes
    Reproduction instructions

    To reproduce the results in this study, a new user should:

    1. Obtain access to the limited-access data and place it in the appropriate folder as specified in the project structure.
    2. Open the R project (.Rproj file).
    3. Restore the environment by running renv::restore() and follow the prompts to install the required packages.
    4. Run main.R to execute the full analysis.

    Note: Since some data is restricted may be difficult to access—particularly for non–World Bank users—the figures generated by the replicators have been included in the reproducibility package for reference.
