    Abstract

While women’s participation in development projects is associated with better development outcomes, this can be difficult to achieve due to women’s lack of information regarding development projects and the benefits of participating in their planning and delivery, cultural barriers, and time poverty. We examine the effect of information provision on women’s stated likelihood of participation in the Kenya Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (KDRDIP), a CDD effort supported by the World Bank. An information experiment was conducted, where women in the treatment received detailed information about KDRDIP and the various benefits of participation in project activities, while households in the control group received a placebo script limited to the description of KDRDIP. The provision of information has a limited effect on the likelihood of women’s participation: receiving information does not influence affect the likelihood of participation, whilst understanding the information received have a non-robust positive effect. The provision of information did not change women’s stated likelihood of participation. Their propensity to participate is instead strongly predicted by prior stated likelihood of participation and prior perception of the benefits of participation.

    Reproduction instructions

To reproduce the results, a new user should follow these steps:

    1. Once the data becomes available, place it in the appropriate folder.
A file named folder_structure is included in the package to guide the correct folder organization.
    2. Open the Stata project.
    3. Run the cleaning, figures, and annex do files to execute the analysis.
As the data is not included in the package, the reproducibility materials contain the outputs generated by the replicators. These are provided so users can verify the results against the published paper.
