    Abstract

This paper presents a dataset and an analytical framework to study the welfare effects of tariff changes on women. The measure of welfare is real income. The tools account for the effects of trade liberalization on the prices paid by consumers, on the prices of products sold by producers and on wages. The data provides aggregate metrics to quantify those welfare effects separately for women and for men. These metrics include household headship (i.e., a comparison of households with males as head relative to households with females as head) as well as household composition (i.e., a comparison of households with different female composition).

Household Impact of Trade for Women
    Note
Source: The Household Impact of Trade for Women (HIT_W) dataset is derived from the Household Impact of Tariffs (HIT) database (Artuç, Porto, and Rijkers 2018, 2019), which harmonizes household survey data on expenditure and income shares for 54 countries. The HIT data are available via the World Bank Development Data Hub (https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/int/search/dataset/0038374). HIT_W further disaggregates these shares by gender-related household indicators. File location: Data/HIT_W_all.dta
