    Abstract

Markets and public institutions must anticipate evolving care demand driven by East Asia and the Pacific’s rapid demographic transition. To this end, we develop the Care Simulation Model, a demographic model that estimates gaps in child- and eldercare needs by integrating life-cycle care needs with the availability of intergenerational family caregivers. The model quantifies unmet care needs and translates them into estimates of potential market size and employment creation in childcare and eldercare. By 2030, unmet need across 21 EAP countries corresponds to 19.9 million potential jobs in childcare and 34.1 million in eldercare. The framework provides a transparent, cross-country tool to inform care policy, workforce planning, and investment strategies.

    Reproducibility

    Technology environment

Paper exhibits were reproduced on a computer with the following specifications:
    • OS: Windows 11 Enterprise
    • Processor: INTEL(R) XEON(R) PLATINUM 8562Y+ (2.80 GHz) (2 processors)
    • Memory available: 128.0 GB

    Technology requirements

    Run time: ~ 90 minutes

    Reproduction instructions

To reproduce the findings in this paper, a replicator must:

    1. Secure Access to Data: Access the datasets not included in the package. See the Datasets section for more details.
    2. Run the Package:
      • Update the working directory in line 17 of the do-file "main.do", and run step 1.
      • Restore the environment in "environment.txt", and run "02_generator.py".
      • Run steps 3 and 4 in the do-file "main.do".

Since some the raw data cannot be redistributed, the package includes the outputs produced by the authors, which can be used to review the results presented in the paper.
